In early 19th-century Rio de Janeiro, Simão and Teresa, children of families divided by years of hatred, fall madly in love. But it is a forbidden passion, unblemished by their parents and siblings, and unsupported by society. Furthermore, they will suffer from the machinations of Mariana, Teresa's false friend who tries everything to separate the couple and take the young man for herself.
